Bridge infrastructure at risk from corrosion as trucks get heavier, engineers say

Engineers warn that some of Australia’s 53,000 bridges could collapse without warning, similar to Italy’s Morandi bridge, because there is no public data on how fast corrosion of older bridges is occurring and no regulations governing bridge safety. Around half the bridges on Australia’s national highways were built in the 1960s or earlier, with only about 10 percent built since 2000, according to Colin Caprani, a senior lecturer of structural engineering for Monash University.
