A recently installed supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system was experiencing repeated lightning and/or power line surge failures. Failures occurred as frequently as once a week during lightning storm activity at a few of the sites. In some instances, entire printed circuit (PC) boards required replacement.
The client installed power line monitors, per our recommendations, at 3 sites and produced a thirty day record prior to our visit. We provided a comprehensive grounding/surge protection system design for both the incoming power lines and the pipeline. The completed comprehensive surge protection systems prevented further failures.
